Our university’s museum is holding the , a joint exhibition between traditional Korean artisans and modern artisans, at the Korean Cultural Center DC in the U.S.

 

This exhibition is a part of the <2019 Traveling Korean Arts> project organized by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange that is held from May 3 to June 21. It is an exhibition for spreading the contemporary characteristics and excellence of Korean cultural arts on the world stage based on the flow of Korean culture from the past to the present and with the theme of modern Korean culture’s lines and colors.

At the cultural center’s K-Art exhibition hall, the furniture, clothing & food, and ceramics used in everyday lives of the nobility during the 15th to 20th century that have been newly reconstructed by the modern craftsman are exhibited. The furniture in the traditional Joseon sarang-bang (reception room) was exhibited along with the tapestry works of Artist Suk-hui Park. In addition, the works of Artist Choi Ji-man that reinterpreted the regularly used white and blue porcelain in the daily lives of the nobility and the traditional Korean white porcelain were exhibited in harmony with everyday furniture, and the work of Artist Ye-ryeong Cho based on the theme of blue official uniform also made its appearance at the exhibition. The first floor of the media exhibition hall exhibited the audio-visual installation art by Project-Rebel9 based on the motif of traditional wedding dress, where the 3 facades of video, sound, and the visitor intersect to create a weaving effect.

Meanwhile, an embroidery workshop where visitors can personally try Korean embroidery and the lecture which introduces Korean embroidery were held at the George Washington University’s Textile Museum on May 2 as side events, and at the Passport DC event that was held as the opening event of the embassy and cultural center by the Korean Cultural Center DC, a workshop where visitors can personally create Korean traditional wedding dress with paper took place on May 4. For more information on the exhibition, you can visit the Korean Cultural Center DC’s website (www.koreaculturedc.org).

 

Our university’s Cultural Planning Department officials, who organized the exhibition, said, “We hope this can be a good opportunity to not only introduce Korean traditions, but also Korea’s aesthetic awareness reinterpreted from a modern perspective to the locals in the U.S.”
